No.15514, Private, George CRYSELL
Aged 35

"C" Coy., 11th Battalion, Essex Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Monday, 25th October 1915

George Hibble Crysell was born in Stansfield in 1880 (Risbridge Q1-1881 4A:538), son of Charles and Mary Ann CRYSELL (née HIBBLE).

1881 census...Aged 4 months, he was at Assington Green, Stansfield with his father Charles CRYSELL (junior) [31] farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [31]; brothers David W [11], Arthur [8], Walter [6] and Edward [2]; sister Ada [5]. All were born in Stansfield.

1891 census...Aged 10 he was at Clare Road, Stansfield with his widower grandfather George HIBBLE [77] born Hawkedon; his aunt Harriett HIBBLE [39] born Stansfield; his great grandmother Mary BROWN [87] born Stansfield. His parents were at Clare Road, Denston with his brothers William (David), Arthur and Walter (all farm labourers) Edward, Charles [3] and Herbert [1]; sister Maud [7]. All the new siblings were born in Stansfield.

1901 census... Aged 22, George and his brother Walter were visitors to the BOWERS family at 21 Victoria Road, Low Leyton, West Ham. His parents were at Clare Road still with his brothers Arthur, Edward (both farm labourers) Charles (butcher's assistant) and Herbert, and a new sister Flora [9] born Stansfield.

In 1902 in West Ham, he married Ada RUDGE [22-3-1881].

1911 census... Aged 30, he was at 133a Claude Road, Francis Road, Low Leyton with his wife Ada [30] born Leytonstone; his sons George [14-6-1903], Walter Edward [24-11-1906] and William Charles [18-2-1909]and daughter Florence Ada [20-6-1902]. All his children were born in Leytonstone. His parents were at Bridgemans, Stansfield with his brother Herbert (farm labourer), sister Flora and Charles grandson Victor [3] born Leyton, London (parentage unknown and registration not found). 2 of the 12 siblings had died.

George and Ada had 2 more children, Dorothy [8-12-1911] and Charlie [11-2-1913].

His brother Herbert was killed serving with the Suffolk Regiment in Belgium in 1916 see here

This case is complicated by the fact that another George (George William) Crysell, of about the same age, also with a father Charles, from Assington Green, was serving in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry from March 1916 and discharged in May 1916 as being unlikely to make an efficient soldier due his health. In fact several other Crysell's from the Stansfield area Service records have survived, unfortunately not this George nor his brother Herbert.

He enlisted in Stratford and died back in England less than 2 months after arriving in the BEF.
