Edward William Cox was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q3-1895 4A:746) son of Charles and Louisa COX (née SORRELL).
His father died in 1899. 1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Endway, Steeple Bumpstead with his grandfather Edward SORRELL [75] labourer; grandmother Sophia SORRELL [73] and his widowed mother Louisa COX [33]. All were born in Steeple Bumpstead. He had a sister Beatrice [1890], boarding with her uncle John SORRELL at Endway, Steeple Bumpstead His grandfather Edward SORRELL died in 1904 1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was still at Endway with his widowed grandmother Sophie and widowed mother Louisa |

The war diary :- East of Gommecourt Wood - sheet 57d.L.1.c.4.4. 1st 11pm Relieved 4 companies 8th West Yorks and 3 companies 2/4 West Riding on a front of about 130 yards from centre of ROSSIGNOL WOOD to L.2.c.2.2. 2nd Heavy intermittent shelling Lt R Barford wounded. CWGC have Edward as the only death in the battalion that day. |
