Walter Fitch was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q2-1894 4A:684), son of William George and Harriet FITCH (née SIGGS).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Churchfield, Steeple Bumpstead with his father William [29] horseman; his mother Harriet [34] born Haverhill; brothers William [8], George [3] and Arthur [10 months]. All except his mother were born in Steeple Bumpstead.

1911 census...Aged 16, he was still at Churchfields, with his widowed mother and brothers George (now recorded as born Hempstead) and Arthur.
His father had died in 1903 and brother William in 1908.

No pension card has been found.


Walter enlisted in Steeple Bumpstead. He died from his wounds at No 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne.
Without his service records it is impossible to say where or when he was wounded. His battalion, although in Reserve for the first day of the Somme, had been in the thick if the fighting around Ovillers early in July.
