LING, Frederick Arthur William

No.C/J 109678, Able Seaman, Frederick Arthur William LING
Aged 33

H.M.S.Malcolm, Royal Navy
Died on Sunday, 1st December 1940

Frederick Arthur William Ling was born on 30th September 1907 in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q4-1907 4A:866), son of Arthur and Alice LING (née STILL).

1911 census...Aged 3, he was at Smith's Green, Steeple Bumpstead with his father Arthur LING [26] horsekeeper born Stanningfield; his mother Alice [26] born Faversham, Kent; sister Phyllis [10 moths] born Steeple Bumpstead.

He married Ruby May TURNER in 1937 (Bromley Q4-1937 2A:1541). Their daughter June was born in 1919 in Kent. In 1939 Ruby was living with her widowed father at 4 Council Houses, Endway, Steeple Bumpstead., she later moved to Sidcup, Kent.

He enlisted in the Royal Navy as Boy 2 at HMS Ganges, aged 17, on 30th September 1924 and signed for 12 years service on 30 September 1925. He was 5 feet 7 inches (170.2 cm) tall, chest 36 inches (91.4 cm) when he was 18 years old, brown eyes and hair.
His available service record only covers the various training establishments and ends 16th October 1928. So far the only other record is his death on HMS Malcolm, but that was not due to enemy action or illness, it is simply recorded as "died", which may be by accident. The fact that he is commemorated on the Chatham memorial would seem to indicate he was buried at sea.
