Harry Mears was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q3-1887 4A:615), son of John and Mary Ann MEARS (née COOK).

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at Walton's Farm, Steeple Bumpstead with his father John MEARS [43]farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [40]; brothers William [15], Charles [12] both farm labourers, and sister Louisa [7]. All were born in Steeple Bumpstead.

1901 census...Aged 13, farm labourer, he was still at Walton's Farm with his parents and sister Louisa.

1911 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was still at Walton's Farm with his parents and brother William (farm labourer)


Harry enlisted in Warley. He died of his wounds at No 19 Casualty Clearing Station at Agnez-les-Duisans.
With his Army records not available it is impossible to say where or when he was wounded. His battalion at the start of May 1917 were in trenches east of Monchy.
