Henry William Playle was born in Birdbrook (Risbridge Q3-1891 4A:681), son of William and Rosana PLAYLE (née HARRINGTON).

1901 census...Aged 10 he was at Broad Green, Steeple Bumpstead with his father William PLAYLE [39] farm labourer born Stambourne; his mother Rosana [38] born Ridgewell; sisters Emily [17], Matilda [12], Maud [7] all born Stambourne and Jane [2] born Ridgewell; brother Jim [5] born Birdbrook.

1911 census...Aged 20, a milkman on farm, he was at Broad Green still, with his parents, sisters Maud Lily, Jane, Emily (SMITH) and her husband George SMITH [34] farm labourer born Steeple Bumpstead and their daughter May [4] born Steeple Bumpstead; brother James (stockman).

He married Muriel Emma TURNER [29-8-1896] in 1916. They had a daughter, Lily May, on 26-6-1916. When Muriel died in 1920, her sister Emma became the guardian of Lily May.
On his pension card his widow was at 6 Skates Hill, Glemsford.


Harry enlisted in Steeple Bumpstead.
On 4th March 1917 the battalion were in the north sector at Bouchavensnes and attacked German trenches on the Moislains Ridge. They took all their objectives and held them against counter-attacks. They suffered 7 officer and 235 other ranks casualties. The war diary for the day consists mainly of a list officers involved.

CWGC records have a total of 70 of the battalion killed that day, 38 of them with no known grave.



Harry was found here, identified by the cross on his grave and removed to Fins




Harry Playle is buried in Sorel-le-Grand , Fins New British Cemetery, grave 7:D:2
