John William Sorrell was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q4-1887 4A:628), son of Thomas and Harriet SORRELL (née BELSHAM).


1891 census...Aged 3, John William was at North Street, Steeple Bumpstead with his father Thomas SORRELL [33] farm labourer; his mother Harriet [28] born Hempstead; sister Mary A [5] and brother Royal E [1]. All except his mother were born in Steeple Bumpstead.

1901 census...Aged 13, stockman, he was at Moyn's Lodge, Steeple Bumpstead with his parents; brothers Ernest[Royal] and Leonard [8] and sister Ida [2]. The new siblings were born in Steeple Bumpstead.

His father died in 1903 and in 1908 his mother, with Leonard [14], Ida[9] and Edward [4] sailed on 16th April from Liverpool aboard the SS Dominion for Quebec/Montreal, Canada

1911 census...Aged 23, John William, a milkman, was boarding with widow Sarah MIDSON at North Street, Steeple Bumpstead.


William enlisted in Chelmsford.
The battalion were fighting around "The Dump". By the 15th they had taken the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
The war diary :-
13th..moved into the trench from G.5.d.1.3 to G.5.d.7.0., one company to remain to hold the redoubt at G.5.d.1.3. and trench to G.5.c.8.8. 14th ..This and following 3 days were occupied in consolidating the trenches gained, especially near G.5.d.9.0. A strong point was made by the RE near this point in the angle at the road junction and occupied by us

CWGC records the battalion had 2 killed on 15th and 2 more on 16th.
