Leslie James Tarling was born on 10th February 1919 (Maldon Q1-1919 4A:945), son of Walter Hardy and Lettice Miriam TARLING (née PORTWAY)
The Japanese had his mother as Lettice Tarling at 2 Lilley Cottages, Steeple Bumpstead. Seemingly he worked on a stud as his occupation was entered as "colt breaker" Brother Walter J was born in 1916 (Maldon Q2) and sister Winifred M in 1925 (Risbridge Q4). In 1939 his widowed mother was at 2 Lilley Cottages, Steeple Bumpstead (7 closed records). His father possibly died in 1930 (Cambridge)


He was not captured until 2 days after the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese.

From their regimental number James Wesley (5828507)-Leslie Tarling (5828512)-Reginald Wesley (5828518) and Leslie Ling (5828526) must have been mobilised in the 5th Suffolks at the same time.
