Arthur Smith was born in Denston (Risbridge Q1-1894 4A:732), son of William and Sarah Ann SMITH (née WRIGHT).

1901 census...Aged 7 he was at The Farm, Farley Green, Stradishall with his father William SMITH [35] horse keeper; his mother Sarah Ann [33] born Wickhambrook; sisters Annie Jane [12], Ethel [9], Florence E [2] and Lil;y D [1 month] born Stradishall. All except his mother and Lily were born in Denston.

1911 census...Aged 17, boy on farm, he was at Building Farm, Stradishall with his parents (father now farm bailiff); sisters Florence and Lily and brother Stanley G [7] born Stradishall. All six siblings survive.


He enlisted in Lowestoft.
According to the war diary, they were at Monchy, in TWIN and HOOK trenches, fairly quiet, 2nd Lt Reading wounded by a sniper and 2 OR killed, 3 wounded
