Sidney Charles BAKER was born Thurston on 9th December 1890 (Stow Q1-1898 4A:853),son of William and Emma BAKER (née MATTHEWS). 1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 38 Tayfen Road, Bury St Edmunds with his uncle George A MATTHEWS [37] railway porter, born Croxton, Norfolk; his aunt Charotte [37],born Great Blakenham; cousin Frank [7] born Bury St.Edmunds. His parents were at Stoney Lane, Thurston, William BAKER [33] railway platelayer, born Bury St.Edmunds, mother Emma [32] born Croxton, Norfolk; sister Annie [7] born Bury St Edmunds; brothers Frederick [5], Albert [2] and Herbert [5 months] all born Thurston His mother died in 1902 and father married Alice SMITH in 1904. Brother Herbert Victor died in 1903 1911 census...Aged 13, he was at Stoney Lane, Thurston with his father; stepmother Alice [39] born Eye; brothers Frederick [14] and Albert [12], half brothers Hubert Leonard [7], Gordon [4] and Harold [1]; half sister Edna [3] All the children were born in Thurston He was married to Ruby SPARROW [7-5-1902] in 1927. Their son Geoffrey G was born in 1928 In the 1939 Register he was at Tin Cottages, Oak Road, Thurston with wife Ruby .One closed record which is presumably their son. |
He enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 16th January 1918, No.118960, transferring the the Royal Air Force on its founding on 1st April 1918. He was a farm labourer, 5 feet 8.74 inches (174.7 cm) tall, chest 35 inches (88.9 cm). Next of king, father William of New Cottages, Thurston. He was an Aircraftsman 2, driver and extended his service 4 years on 23rd April 1919. At some time he fractured and deformed a shoulder and was discharged to the Reserves on 2nd September 1920. Not serving overseas, he had no WW1 medals He died at ? House, Thurston as the result of myocardial failure from the effect of chronic gastritis and old pleurisy. His widow the informant. He was a farm labourer.
