Tasked mainly with clearing the area of the fallen of the Ulster Division, they did suffer several casualties on the 21st, just possibly when Frederick was hit.

TROSTON SOLDIER'S DEATH IN FRENCH HOSPITAL

It is with deep regret we record the death of Prvt Fred Shaw of the 9th Suffolks. Mrs Shaw has been notified that her son passed peacefully away on Tuesday, August 22nd at No.6 General Hospital, Rouen, and was buried in the cemetery of Ste Sever, Rouen. Prvt Fred Shaw joined H.M.Forces in September 1914, and after undergoing a course of training, left England for France,. where he had a long experience of trench life. Once he was sick and was in hospital for a few weeks, after which he was again sent to the firing line and went through many battles, and in July last, during the great advance, he was seriously wounded, being shot through the spine. He was taken to No.6 General Hospital, Rouen where everything was done for his recovery, but all efforts failed. Prvt Fred Shaw was much respected by all in Troston, and is the first of the old scholars of Troston Voluntary School to lay down his life for his country. On Sunday Aug.27, a funeral service in memory of him took place in St Mary's Church, Troston..........

TROSTON LAD BURIED IN FRANCE

We produce herewith a photo of the late Prvt F.Shaw of the 9th Suffolks, of Troston, whose death we recorded in our last issue. Deceased was much respected in Troston, where his boyhood days were spent, while since in the Army he had made many friends. This was fully borne out by the fact that several sympathetic letters were received by the deceased's parents. He was admitted to the general hospital at Rouen, having been seriously wounded in the spine, his death taking place on August 23rd. He was buried in a soldier's grave at St.Severs Cemetery, Rouen, shortly afterwards.
