Bennett Bradnam was born in West Wickham (Linton Q3-1890 3B:503), son of Charles and Mary BRADNAM (née REYNOLDS).


1891 census...Aged 1, he was at The Street, West Wickham with his father Charles BRADNAM [39] farm labourer; his mother Mary [38]; sisters Louisa [12] and Rose [4]; brothers John [9] and Fredric [7]. All were born in West Wickham.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at The Barracks, West Wickham with his father Charles BRADNAM (now horsekeeper); his mother Mary; brothers John [19] and Fred [17] both farm labourers, and Albert [6]; sister Rose [14]. All were born in West Wickham. Also there were his sister Louisa [22] born West Wickham and her husband Henry GRANGER [22] farm labourer born in Dullingham and their son Reginald [7 months] born in West Wickham.

1911 census...Aged 21, a farm labourer, he was in West Wickham with his parents; brother Albert (farm labourer) and nephew Reginald William GRANGER [10]

His mother died in 1912, and the pension card has his father at The School, West Wickham

His brother Albert, also in the 11th Suffolks, (they had consecutive regimental numbers) died of his wounds in a Manchester hospital in 1916. see here
Both brothers had been working on a farm alongside their father and enlisted in Linton on September 29th, 1914. Both were wounded on 1st July 1916. Albert succumbed to his wounds after evacuation to UK, but Bennett recovered and returned to France in September.



The battalion were not involved in any major operations at the time, but did have 7 killed on 13th, all buried in Jeancourt in adjacent graves. The war diary actually misses out 13th and 14th. They were at ROISEL and 12th to 15th the report was:-
. "Work consisted for the most part in repairing FARM TRENCH captured the day before and badly knocked about. The enemy was very active with PINEAPPLES[hand grenade] and trench mortars hindering progress. He also shelled lines of approach continuously making carrying a difficult task".
