William Moss was born in Bardwell (Thingoe Q4-1879 4A:575) son of Richard and Susan MOSS (née BEALES).
1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Street Cottages, Great Barton, Suffolk with his father Richard MOSS [36] stockman, born Chippenham, Cambs; his mother Susan [40]; brothers George [14] and Benjamin [12], both farm labourers, Henry [9], Alfred [7] and Frederick [4]. All except his father were born in Bardwell. 1891 census...Aged 10, he was at The Street, West Wickham with his parents (father a farm labourer); brothers Benjamin, Henry, Alfred and Frederick, all farm labourers. 1901 census...Aged 20, farm labourer, he was at Bottle Hall, West Wickham with his parents and brother Henry (railway policeman). His father died in 1905. 1911 census...Aged 29, single, farm labourer, he was at Bottle Hall with his widowed mother. His mother died in 1916 |

He enlisted in Sudbury. Served at one time in the 7th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment
In the Poelcapelle area:- On the 27th the front line posts were quiet except for slight shelling till 6.30pm when the lines were heavily shelled, 9 other ranks died, and 13 wounded. On the 28th the Battalion was relieved by 8th Duke of Wellingtons and 9th West Yorkshires, returning to Canal Bank, Varna Farm or Gournier Farm CWGC have 22 killed, only 6 with known graves. CWGC figures often higher than war diary figures since of course CWGC will include those missing and later presumed dead.
