MacFALL, Arthur Ernest

No.44477, Gunner, Arthur Ernest MacFALL
Aged 23

20th Heavy Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery
Died on Sunday, 8th October 1916

Arthur Ernest MackFall was born in Pilton, Somerset in 1893 (Shepton Mallet Q2-1893 5C:473) son of Henry and Susan MackFALL (née CAREY). His elder sister Charlotte's mother was also CAREY, however no such marriage registration has been found, only a Henry Mackfall marrying Sarah Ann PINK in 1889 (Wincanton Q2 5C:781) and seemingly Henry's second marriage, the first was to Harriet SMALLEY who died Gainsborough Q4-1888.
It appears most likely that this was also his mother's 2nd marriage as Sarah Ann CAREY (born Lacock, Wiltshire) had married in 1878 Arthur PINK who died in 1880 and she seemingly reverted to her original maiden name. There remains the switch from Sarah Ann to Susan, but that was not uncommon.

Hopefully if this is not correct someone will pass on the details as this is only one possibility.

1901 census...Aged 7 he was at The Lamb Inn, High Street, West Wratting with his father Henry MacFALL [56] innkeeper and Mail Cart contractor born Spilsby, Lincolnshire; his mother Susan [46] born Lacock, Wiltshire; sister Charlotte [9] born Queen Camel, Somerset. In this census Arthur is also recorded as born in Queen Camel.

1911 census...Aged 17, farm labourer, he was in West Wratting with his parents (father now a domestic coachman). He is now recorded as born in Pilton, Somerset.

He enlisted in Linton.
Recorded as "died" usually indicates of illness, he was the only death in his unit that day. Artillery units are almost impossible to pin down, even the heavy batteries were often on the move.
