Rollie George Salmon was born on 1889 in West Wratting (Linton Q1-1889 3B:506),illegitimate. His parentage is unknown, but he was raised as a son by his grandparents Abraham and Abigail SALMON (née MARSH). Possible their daughter Alice (born 1871) was his mother

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at The Common, West Wratting with his grandfather Abraham SALMON [49] wheelwright; his grandmother Abigail [48]; uncles John [18] apprentice wheelwright, Abraham [15] and James [13], farm labourers, and Isaac [11]; aunts Maryann [8] and Delia [6]. All were born in West Wratting.

1901 census...Aged 12, now recorded as son, he was at Common Road, West Wratting with Abraham and Abigail; uncles James (wheelwright) and Isaac (domestic groom) and aunt Delia. The children are all now recorded as born in Balsham.

1911 census...Aged 22, recorded as son, a farm labourer, he was in West Wratting with Abaraham and Abigail and his uncles James and Isaac, both farm labourers. George, James and Isaac are now farm labourers, all recorded as born in Balsham.

His grandmother died in 1915, grandfather in 1932 but his uncle James was sole legatee on his Army documents.


He enlisted in Haverhill.
"History of the Suffolk Regiment" Lt Col Murphy :-
On 20th July the battalion having assemble and deployed on Pont Street, took part in renewed attacks on Longueval and Delville Wood. It was still dark when the artillery bombardment lifted and the advance began.The two Suffolk companies in the front line moved in double lines of platoons with a front of 140 yards each. Much bitter fighting followed, which, though indecisive locally, enable a footing to be gained in High Wood by a Division (33rd) containing another Suffolk battalion, 4th, and the British line to be linked up thence with Longueval. The casualties in the 2nd battalion were heavy..."

George Salmon is buried in Longueval, Delville Wood Cemetery, grave 12:E:7
Found in the north part of Delville Wood, he was re-interred in Delville Wood Cemetery in 1921
