SANDERSON, George Samuel

No.12316, Private, George Samuel SANDERSON
Aged 39

2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment)
Died of Illness on Friday, 15th December 1916

George Samuel Sanderson was born on 10th December 1877, baptised 13th January 1878 in West Wratting, son of Thomas and Rebecca SANDERSON(née DEAN). His birth registration has not been found, the baptisms of most of the siblings have been found but no birth registrations for the first four children. Maybe a transcription error but unlikely in view of the numbers. The family switches from Sanderson to Saunderson at times

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Valley House, West Wratting with his father Thomas SANDERSON [45] farm labourer; his mother Rebecca [30]; brothers Robert W [9] and Albert A [5]; sisters Florence H [7] and Ellen L [1]. All were born in West Wratting.

His mother died in Q3-1886, apparently at the same time as the last of the siblings was born, Alice, who died at that time also

1891 census...Aged 13, farm labourer, he was at High Street, West Wratting with widower father; sisters Florrie and Annie [7]; brothers Robert and Albert (farm labourers) and James [9]. The 2 new siblings born in West Wratting. The family name is now recorded as Saunderson.

1901 census...Aged 23, domestic gardener, he was at High Street, West Wratting with his widower father; sisters Florence and Annie; brother James (farm labourer). The family name is now recorded as Saunderson.

1911 census...Aged 33, a groundsman, he was in West Wratting with his widower father, brother James (both farm labourers) and sister Anne E. Of the 8 siblings, 2 had died (Ellen and Alice) The family name is recorded as Saunderson.

His father died in 1914, as Sanderson. His brothers Robert William, Albert Arthur and James Thomas, and sisters Mrs Anne Elizabeth TAYLOR and Mrs Florence Kate BEAVIS are named by the Army as his legatees.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
Dying of illness in a base hospital and in the absence of further records, it is not possible to be sure what his illness was.
