Harry BUMPSTEAD was born in Whepstead (4th Quarter 1890 Thingoe 4a-633), son of William and Elizabeth BUMPSTEAD (née BASS).

1891 census...Aged 7 months, he was at Old School Road, Whepstead with his father William BUMPSTEAD [34] farm labourer; his mother Elizabeth [30]; half sister Alice BALL [7]; brothers William [4] and Arthur [2}]. All were born in Whepstead

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at School Road, Whepstead with his parents; brothers William [14] farm labourer, Arthur [12] and Fred [7], also Percy Hardy [1].

1911 census...Aged 20. a domestic gardener, he was at Chedburgh Road, Whepstead with his widower father and brothers Willima (contractor's labourer), Arthur (farm labourer) and Fred (farm labourer). Bis mother had died in 1910.

His brother Arthur was killed in action at Gaza on 2nd November 1917. see here


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds., Suffolk Regiment No. 1785, later re-numbered. He was posted to Gallipoli on 10th August 1915, and later to Palestine

After the 2nd Battle for Gaza, the Turks having gained control of Gaza, the 5th Suffolks consolidated on a line from the sea to Mendur (just west of Sheikh Abbas). Not having Harry's service record, the other documents found are divided as to whether he died of wounds or was killed in action.
