George James GRIMWOOD was born in Whepstead (3rd qtr 1892 Thingoe 4a:737, son of Harry and Alice Mary GRIMWOOD (née SPARROW).

His mother died in 1900. His father married Emily Maud BRUCE in 1901

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Bury Road, Whepstead with his father Harry GRIMWOOD [35] postman and sister Edith Rose [13]. All were born in Whepstead

1911 census...Aged 18, an apprentice wheelwright, he was at Brockley Road, Whepstead with his father; step-mother Emily Maud [39] born Gt Welnetham; half sisters Daisy Clara [8], Emily Augusta [6] and Maud Mary [3 months]. All the children were born in Whepstead.

His sister Edith Rose died in 1913.

The pension card has not been found.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds

On the 4th November the battalion had taken the Turkish second line, taking over the whole El'Arish redoubt. No report found of 5th, but the 6th saw a tremendous enemy barrage before withdrawing.
