John Henry MUSK was born in 1878 in Whepstead (1st qtr 1878 Thingoe 4a:537), son of Julian and Diana Elizabeth Frances MUSK (née WELLS).
Baptised in St Petronilla, Whepstead on 7th April 1878.

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at White Horse Road, Whepstead with his father, Julian MUSK [34] farm labourer; his mother Diana [28] and brother Walter [8 months] born Gt Barton. All except Walter were born in Whepstead

1891 census...Aged 13, he was a servant for Horsce Stevenson atthe "Waggon Inn", 3 Risbygate Street, Bury St,Edmunds. His parents were at Sadlers Lane, Brockley with his brothers Walter [10] and William [8]; sister Annie [6], Lily [5] and Georgina [2]. All the children born Brockley.

His mother died in 1898 in Brockley.

1901 census...not found in this census. His widower father was at The Hole, Whepstead with his brother Walter. sister Lily and Rosina [9] born Brockley

1911 census...Aged 33, a farm labourer, he was at The Hole, Whepstead with his widower father, sister Georgina [23] and nephew Lelsie Owen MUSK [4] born Bury St. Edmunds.

The pension card has his sister Georgina at The Hole, Whepstead.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
He arrived in France/Flanders on 10th January 1915. On the 9th February they were in the Verbrandenmolen Sector, suffering from relentless shelling, manning trench 2 feet deep in water. CWGC records show that 6 of the battalion were killed that day, only three have a known grave.
