Stanley Charles Percy Murkin was born in Wickhambrook on 18th April 1899 (Risbridge Q2-1899 4A:818), baptised in Wickhambrook on 6th August 1899, son of George William and Rosanna MURKIN (née HURST).

1901 census...Aged 2, he was at Coltsfoot Green, Wickhambrook with his father George MURKIN [41] farm labourer; his mother Rosanna [40]; sister Jessie [12]; brother Willie [6] and cousin Willie HURST [6]. All were born in Wickhambrook. The surname has been entered as Murking.

He was admitted to Wickhambrook School on 27th June 1904, whilst living at Blacksmith's Hill, and left school on 15th April 1913.

1911 census...Aged 11, he was at Victoria Cottage, Wickhambrook with his parents and brother Arthur (general labourer).

His cousin, William Hurst, was killed in 1918 in Belgium see here


He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds and served less than one year.

Casualties for 17th-30th were 3 killed, 3 died of wounds, 9 wounded, and 16 gassed.
