Arthur William Brown was born in Withersfield (Risbridge Q2-1892 4A:701) son of Eli and Sarah Hannah BROWN (née CARTER).


1901 census...Aged 8, he was a boarder at Barrack Row, Withersfield with Robert EVERETT, his wife Harriet and their son Alfred. At another Barrack Row address were his widower father Eli BROWN,[51] a farm labourer born Withersfield; his brothers David [23], Walter [20] both farm labourers, and Ernest [14] a houseboy; sisters Eliza [18] and Clara [16],these all born in Thurlow; brothers John [10], Herbert [6] and Sidney [2]; sister Mary [4], all born in Withersfield.

His mother had died earlier in 1901.

1911 census...Aged 19, a soldier, he was at Barrack Row, Withersfield with his widower father Eli BROWN [63] farm labourer; brothers John [21] and Herbert [17] both farm labourers. All were born in Withersfield.

CWGC have the address later as Hollow Hill Cottages, Withersfield.

His brother Herbert, also in the Suffolks, died in France in 1917 see here


He enlisted in Haverhill. His number indicates joining in January 1911.
The war diary says they were in trenches at Vierstraat, routine work, few casualties during 1st to 4th March (3 on 2nd, who are actually named)
