Arthur Hazelwood was born in Withersfield (Risbridge Q3-1889 4A:625), baptised in Withersfield on 11th December 1889 son of John and Mary Ann HAZELWOOD (née WISEMAN).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was in Withersfield with his widowed mother Mary Ann [41] born Horseheath; sister Jane[17]; brothers George [14] (farm labourer and William [7]. All except his mother were born in Withersfield. There was also a lodger, William Moore [27] farm labourer.
His father is believed to have died in Woodbridge at the end of 1898.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Silver Street, Withersfield with his widowed mother; brother William (farm labourer), boarder William Moore and visitor Charles Loveday [6] born Great Wratting.

1911 census...Aged 22, single, farm labourer, he was "opp" White Horse, Withersfield with William MOORE [46] horsekeeper born Withersfield for whom his widow mother was house keeper, also there his brother William [28] horsekeeper.

He married Emma Maria BRETT in 1912 (b. 28-2-1893). Her address on the pension card was c/o Mrs Hammond, Wentworth House, Cambridge, then Trethias Cottages, St Merryn, nr Padstow, Cornwall and then 19 Reynolds Close, Golders Green, London


He enlisted in Cambridge. The Cambridgeshires (there was only one battalion) were on the Salient in April 1918, just south west of Ypres. The war diary is not very informative "28 April-30 April At Dominion Camp G.23.b in position of readiness". That was after having withdrawn from the line the previous day, then on May 1st they formed part of a composite battalion

CWGC records show 9 of the Battalion killed on the 28th, 2 buried in Voormezeele and 7 named on the Tyne Cot memorial.
