Harry Metcalf was born in Withersfield (Risbridge Q2-1889 4A:660) (illegitimate), baptised in St Mary's Withersfield on 25th January 1891, son of Joseph and Harriet SMITH (née METCALFE)(they married in Q3:1890) .

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Willow Bank, Withersfield with his father Joseph SMITH [26] hay trusser, born Little Thurlow, his mother Harriet [22] born Withersfield and sister Gertrude [6 months] born Withersfield.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Barrack Row, Withersfield with his parents; sisters Gertrude and Winifred [2 months]; brothers Thomas [6] and Ralph [2].The new siblings were all born in Withersfield.

1911 census...Aged 21, a hay cutter's labourer, he was still at Barrack Row with his parents; brothers Ralph, Hugh [5], Kenneth [3] and Roy [11 months]; sister Winifred. Two of the ten siblings had died.

He enlisted in Haverhill.
Dying of his wounds it is impossible in the absence of his service records to say exactly where or when he was wounded, but the battalion were involved in the battle at Bullecourt on the 13th May 1917. The register of "Soldiers Effects" has noted Smith Harry, alias Medcalf Harry. It seems therefore that Harry may have used the name Medcalf at times.
