Vernon Edward Pereira was born in Rougham (1st qtr 1922 Bury St. Edmunds 4a:1668) son of Major Frederick Vernon Cowper and Margaret Challis PEREIRA (née HOOLEY)

His father was 2nd Lt in the Suffolks when they landed in France on 17th August 1914. He was captured early on and was eventually repatriated in 1918.



Vernon was the pilot of Vickers Wellington 1C ser.no.R1044, c/s JN-Y which crashed in fog at 04:45 on 28th May 1941 on Colborough Hill, Halstead, 10 miles east of Leicester. They had taken off from RAF Newton at 01:45 , part of a 3 aircraft raid BOULOGNE. This aircraft actually attacked the alternative target of OSTEND with 4x500lb bombs, 1x250 lb bomb and 120 x 4lb incendiary bombs They flew into 10/10 fog on the return and trying to ascertain their position, crashed near Leicester.
The crew were Sgt.Vernon Douglas HUGGETT (pilot); Sgt Vernon Edward PEREIA (2nd pilot):Sgt Peter JARVIS (Observer); F/Sgt Ernest Burton WILCOX and Sgt.Michael Edward GARDINER (both Wireless Op/Air Gunners), all killed, and W.Officer Lewis EDMUNDS (Rear gunner)- injured. injured
