Arthur Matthews was born in 1910 (3rd qtr 1910 Maldon 4a;756) son of Charles and Hannah MATTHEWS (née ANDREWS).

1911 census...Aged 7 months he was at Sheepcoates Cottages, Great Totham, Essex with his father Charles MATTHEWS [48] farm labpourer born Lavenham; his mother Hannah [41] bron Cockfield; brothers Fredserick [16] born Lavenham, William [13] born Alpheton, Frank [11] born Sudbury, Charles [5] born Alpheton and Sydney [3] born Totham; sister Elsie [8] born Alpheton. The record actually shows Charles junior as the same age as Arthur and yet born in separate places. The GRO records however have Charles born in 1905

In the 1939 register his widowed mother and his brother Frank, invalid uncle Arthur Andrews, were at Shop Hill, Alpheton
