Bertie George COOKE was born in Barrow (2nd qtr 1898 Thingoe 4a:810) son of Herbert and Louisa COOKE (née BOND)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 1 Meadow Row, Barrow with his father Herbert COOKE [27] farm labourer born Wheostead; his mother Louisa [25]; sisters Maude [7] and Ivy E [5] ;brother Frank E [6 months]; his widowed grandmother Sophia BOND [55] his uncle John BOND [22] and cousin Dora BOND [8]. All except his father were born in Barrow

1911 census...Aged 13, he was still in Barrow with his parenst (father now farm engine driver); sister Maude, Ivy and Vera [2]; brothers Frank [10], Cecil [4]and William [6 months]; grandmother Sophie BOND. His mother had lost one of her 8 children.

The pension card has his mother at 1 Meadow Row, Barrow but after her death his father was at 15 Council Houses, Barrow.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds

Dying of his wounds and no service record available it is impossible here to say exactly where or when he was wounded. Kantara became a major base and hospital centre.
