The battalion war dairy has little to say. It was the time of the battle of the Bazentin Ridge and the battalion were at the south end of Caterpillar Wood. However with no service record and John dying of wounds, it is impossible to say exactly when or where he was wounded. 21 Casualty Clearing Station was based at La Neuville at the time, presumably where John died.
