1891 census...Aged 9, he was at 19 The Street, Barrow with his father Arthur SALE [44] farm labourer; his mother Maria [44]; brothers George [18] farm labpourer, Frederick [14] and Henry [12] farn labourer; sister Mary A [15]. All were born in Barrow. 1901 census...Aged 19, a farm labourer, he was still at The Street, Barrow with his parents; sister Jane [15] and nephew Bertie [6] 1911 census...Aged 29, a farm labourer, still in Barrow with his parents, brother Fred, nephew Bert; sister Mrs A LYES [25] and her daughter Ethel LYES [1] His mother had lost 6 of her 11 children |
He enlisted in Barrow.
As he was with the Labour Corps at the time of his death it is virtually impossible to ascertain where he was at that time. The CWGC have been informed that their record show William as in the Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment, but his CWGC headstone shows him in the Queens, whch is the Royal West Surrey Regiment.
