Henry James Watson was born in Barrow (4th qtr 1888 Thingoe 4a:879) son of John and Mary Ann WATSON (née WALLIS)

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 11 The Street, Barrow with his father John WATSON [28] farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [28]; brother William J [6] and sister Florence J [3]. All were born in Barrow

1901 census...Aged 12, he was still at The Street, Barrow, with his parents; brothers William J (bricklayer's labourer), Frederick G [8] and Frank [4]; sisters Florence, Annie [9], Elizabeth [6] and Lily [3 months]

1911 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was boarding with his widower brother William James WATSON [26] grocer's assistant; nephew Kenneth William WATSON [4] and sister Annie. William had married Georgina CRICK in 1905. She died in 1910 and William married Lily Emma PEARSON in 1912



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The battalion had arrived in Alexandria from Gallipoli. In the four months there they had lost, killed, wounded or sick, over 800 men. Arriving in Egypt they had just 43 fit men left.
