Hector Charles Borley was born in Beyton (3th qtr 1884 Stow 4a:703) son Charles and Eliza Florence BORLEY (née GAME)

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Drinkstpone Road, Beyton with his father Charles BORLEY, [52] boot repairer born Tostock; his mother Eliza [33] born Stowmarket; sisters Kate [13], Julia [11], Maria [10] and Lily [8]; brothers John [4] and William [1] born Tostock. All the children except William were born in Byeton.

1901 census...Aged 15, a stockman, he was at The green, Beyton with his parents; brothers John R (bricklayer's labourer), William and Claude [7]; ssiter Annie M (Maria).

1911 census...Aged 26, a carter, he was at Bridge Yard, Beyton with his parenst, sister Maria, brother William (carter) and niece Annie SEXTON [4]. His mother had lost one of her 8 children. His mother was still there on the pension card.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
On the 29th the enemy had fired a mine under the 4th Middlesex and on the 30th after an in-effective barrage on the crater an attack was made to reoover it. The battalion war diary:-
HOOGE, 30th Sept.1915
Bombers and 1 Coy 4th Middsx on the right up BE - The bombers and 1 Coy 2 R Scots centre of the salient - The bombers and 1 Coy 2 Suff on the left up B7 The attack was made by A Coy under the command of Capt G C Smith who was unfortunately killed at the commencement. - The attack succeeded in reaching the edge of the crater being gallantly led by Capt de Castro in the face of mmachine gun and rifle fire and also bombs. Tnhey wewre also stopped by barbed wire which Capt de castro proceeded to cut. At this period Major Turner in command of the attacking party was killed - also Lt Tholl and 2ns Lt Law i/c the bombers and Capt Daltry was wounded. The attack which had reached this position was forced to retire by enfiled M.G.fine and formed a line out to the right, making use of B4 S and digging a new trench connecting up in the direction of POLLOCK STREET where the 2 RS were still bombing. This line was strengthened and consolidated during the night by the HAC who were brought up to connect up with the Royal Scots....(followed by list of those killed, including Hector) 84 wounded and 2 missing


In fact CWGC records have 36 killed that day
