Unsure of his earlier days but believed to be this man

Arthur William HATTON was born in Thorncote (2nd qtr 1873 Biggleswade 3b:367) son of Mark and Matilda or Elizabeth HATTON (née GIBSON)

1881 census...Aged 7, he was at The Beeston Cross, Sandy with his father Mark HATTON [37] pub;lican born Warden; his mother Matild [33] born Abbotdsley ; brothers Harry [5] and Herbert [3] both born at Thorncote. His father died in 1886 and the boys scattered.


1891 census...Aged 17, an assistant grocer, he was at Church Street, Biggleswade. His mother was in service at Thorncote
In 1892 his mother married John Wheatley in Thorncote.

1901 census...Aged 27 he was a sergeant in the Northamptonshire Regiment in South Africa. His mother was in Thorncote with his step father and his brother Harry

1911 census...Aged 37, he was a Territorials Instructor, lodging at 26 Marefair, Northampton.

He married Mabel Ellen AUSTIN [21-3-1889] in Beyton on 13th July 1915, living at The Green, Beyton




The battalion had only landed at Suvla Bay 7 days earlier. RSM Arthur William Hatton) was blown up and killed by a Turkish shell along with Major Albert Cecil Henson whilst they were waiting to see the C.O. (Lieutenant Colonel Edward George Curtis) on 22nd August 1915. According to one source it was regarding a Court Martial case. It appears that the man under Courts Martial was also killed.
