Percy William Lock was born in Beyton (3rd qtr 1897 Stow 4a:845) son of Henry William Joseph and Mary Ann LOCK (née BAKER)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at The Green, Beyton with his father Henry W J LOCK [36]farmer born Walsham le Willows; his mother Mary Ann [35] born Gippimg; brother Edmund [11] born Stanton; sisters Maud [10] and Edith [7] both born Stanton.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was still in Beyton with his parents (father now retired farmer); sister Edith; brother Edmund. His mother had lost one of her five children.

His father's address on the pension card was 4 Harp Close, Sudbury, later moving to 6 Springfeid Terrace, East Street, Sudbury.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The battalion was in reserve but actually became the first troops engage the enemy around Bac St Maur. Heavy fighting took place from the 9th onwards. At one stage they were ordered to withdraw behind the River Lys but Lt Col Tuck found the neighbouring battalion could not pull back for another two hours. In which case Lt Col Tuck said he would try to hang on. This they did, with heavy losses and materially saving two brigades.




Percy Lock is buried in Suffolk Cemetery, La Rolanderie Farm, Erquinghem Lys, France 1:A:1
