James Clayden was born in Hempstead (3rd qtr 1883 Saffron Walden 4a 534) son of Alfred and Eliza CLAYDEN (née WILLIS). Although registered as CLAYDEN,he can be found as CLAYDON

1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Tittle Hall, Boxted with his father Alfred CLAYDEN [35] gamekeeper born Hempstead; his mother Eliza [36] born Steeple Bumpstead; brothers Harry [12] and Joseph[10] both born Steeple Bumpstead, and George William [3] born Boxted; sisters Amelia [5] and Aley May [1] both born Boxted.

1901 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at Tittle Hall with his parents; sisters kate [23] born Bumpstead, Minnie (Amelia)[6], May and Grace [9] born Boxted; brothers Harry and Jospeh (farm labourers) and William

1911 census...Aged 27, farm labourer, he was still at Tittle Hall, Boxted with his mother; brother in law George Pearon [34] and George's children Alfred [6] and Agnes [3]. All the Pearsons were born in Boxted. His father was visiting James' brother Harry and his wife and children in Walthamstow.

On the pension card his mother was at St.Leonard's Lodge, Wixoe, and apparently, on her death his father moved to 2 Council Cottages.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. "Soldiers Died" has him born in Radwinter ?

The battalion was on the eastern edge of Bernafay Wood, ready to attack Guillemont and Ginchy. The attack, three time postpned was fianlly abandoned due to losing Longueville and most of Delville Wood



James Clayden is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme pier/face 1C/2A
