Arthur Taylor was born in Cavendish (1st qtr 1885 Sudbury 4a:678) son of Frederick and Eva TAYLOR (née BASHAM).Baptised in Stansfield on 5th April 1885
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Pledgers Farm, Stansfield with his father Frederick TAYLOR [31] farm labourer born Stansfield; his mother Eva [31] born Poslingford; brothers George Henry [7] born Stansfield and Walter [2] born Cavendish; sister Sarah [4] born Cavendish and Jane Maria [1 month] born Stansfield 1901 census...Aged 16, farm labourer, he was at Lay's Farm, Glemsford with his parents; brothers George (farm labourer) and Walter (shepherd); sisters Jane and Eliza [7] born Stansfield. 1911 census...Aged 26, labourer, he was at Goymer's Farm, Denston with his parents and brother George. The pension card has his father at Park Farm Cottages, Boxted. The family was always on the move, but we do not know when they moved to Boxted. His brother Walter was killed in France in 1916 ....see here |
He enlisted in Wickhambrook. His medal index card has not been found, but from his number he would not have been abroad before 1916, therefore "Mutt and Jeff" seem correct On 11th/12th October 1918 the battalion relived the 1st Leicesters at Bohain. They attempted to take a trench along the ridge but owing to uncut wire suffered severe casualties before the assault was called off CWGC records have 17 killed
