Harry Friend was born in Salford, Lancs (3rd qtr 1895 Salford 8D:198) son of Charles and Elizabeth Ann FRIEND (née MATHER) Baptised on 15th September 1895 in Salford

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at 27 Ross Street, Salford, Lancs with his father Charles FRIEND [43] labourer in paper mill, born Salisbury, Wilts; his mother Elizabeth [40]; sister Flosence [11] and brother Thomas[9]. All except his father born in Salford.

1911 census...Aged 15, he was at 5 Castle Street, Salford with his parents and brother Thomas. His mother had lost 5 of her 8 children

On the pension card his father was at Pitches Farm, Bradfield St Clare. "Soldiers Died" has Frederick born in Salford, enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds

The battalion war diary says no casualties on 5th but CWGC have him as the only 9th Suffolk killed that day, 1 other did die elsewhere in hospital



Harry Friend is buried in White Hose Cemetery, St Jean les Ypres 1:B:1
