Robert George Alderton was born in Bradfield St.George (4th qtr 1896 Thingoe 4a:803) son of Harriett Alice ALDERTON. Baptised in Bradfield St.George on 2nd October 1898. His mother married Frederick HUFFEY in 1914, of The Lane, Tostock
On Army Form 5080, in 1919, his mother recorded that his father was Isaac COCKSEDGE of Bradfield St George

1901 census...Aged 4, as George Alderton, he was at Gt Green, Bradfield St George with his father Isaac COCKSEDGE [52]married, carter/dealer born Rougham; his mother Alice ALDERTON [26] single born Bury St.Edmunds; sisters Maude ALDERTON [4] born Bury St.Edmunds and Lettie ALDERTON[3] born Bradfield St George; brother William ALDERTON [6 months] born Bradfield St George.

1911 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was in Bradfield St George with his mother Alice H ALDERTON [35] single, born Bury St.Edmunds and his sister Rosina [4] born Bradfield St.George. His father seems to have died in 1910



He attested on 27th August 1915 in Hull, being posted to Pocklington and the 14th Reserve Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He gave his age as 19 years 10 months, a farm servant from Bradfield St George, Church of England. He was 5 feet 3 inches tall, chest 33 to 35 inches, weight 112 lbs, next of kin, his mother Alice HUFFY. He was transferred to the 13th Bn on 16th April 1916 when posted to the BEF in France. Posted to the 8th Battalion on ( date washd out on form) and killed in action on 21st July 1916

The battalion was in trenches near Montauban and the Quarries. On the night of the 20th/21st they were relieved by the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and went back to trenches just north of the QUARRY.
