Charles Cobbold was born in Hessett on 21st November 1871 (4th qtr 1871 Stow 4a:494) son of William and Sarah Elizabeth COBBOLD (née GILL). Baptised in St.Ethelbert's, Hessett on 1st December 1871

1881 census...Aged 9, he was at Free Wood Street, Bradfield St George with his father William COBBOLD [34] farm labourer born Bradfield St George, his mother Sarah [37] born Rougham; brother William [5] and sister Elizabeth [7] both born Bradfield St George

1891 census...Aged 20, a collier, he was 17 Cliff View, Denaby, Doncaster, lodging with 2 other Bradfield men with William and Emma PURKISS (also Bradfield born). At Free Wood Street were his parents; brothers William, Alfred, Freddy and Arthur [2]; sisters Annie [7] and Lillie [5].

Three younger brothers died in the Great War.

He died of enteric fever at Modder River.
His medal was last seen in 2014 selling for £300 at Dixon's. His Queen's South Africa medal has clasps for Bemont and Modder River

James is commemorated the Boer War Memorisal on Cornhill, Bury St.Edmunds
also Duncombe Place, York and on the St Michael's Chapel Memorial in York Minster
