Frederick Last was born in Bradfield St George (2nd qtr 1878 Thingoe 4a:574) son of Alfred and Charlotte LAST (née MOORE)

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Great Wood, Bradfield St George with his father Alfred [48] woodsman; his mother Charlotte [44]; brothers Walter [19] woodsman, John [10], Bradbrook [8], and Harry [6]; sisters Charlotte [11] and Jane [5]. All were born in Bradfield St George.

1891 census...Aged 13, groom/gardener, he was lodging at Upper Green, Felsham with the BREWER family. At Felsham Road, Bradfield St George were his parents and brothers Bradbrook and Harry, and sister Jane.

1901 census...Aged 23, a woodsman, he was at Felsham Road, Bradfield St George with his widowed mother, brother Harry and sister Jane. His father had died in 1893

1911 census...Aged 33, a woodsman., he was at Felsham Road still with his mother, brother Harry. sister Jane and nephew Bertie [5] born Bradfield St George

The pension card puts his dependant, sister Jane, at Felsham Wood Yard, Bradfield St George.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The battalion war diary has :-
The battalion took up positions in prepared line just north of NIEPPE at 6 am and remained in this position during the day
Enemy low flying aircraft very active and occasionally opened fire from machine guns on our trenches. This was replied to by our Lewis guns. The battalion remained in this position during the night. Patrols were sent out to keep in touch with the battalion in the front line.


Despite an apparently quite day, CWGC record 7 killed of the battalion
