Sidney William Maidwell was born 10th April 1891 (2nd qtr 1891 Thingoe 4a:783) the son of Susan MAIDWELL who died in 1892. He was then apparently reared by his uncle and aunt (Emma BULLETT the sister of his mother.) 1901 census...Aged 9, he was in Bradfield St George with his uncle and aunt Henry and Emma BULLETT, with his grandparents Fred and Charlote MAIDWELL. All born in Bradfield St George 1911 census...Not found in this census, he was in the Royal Navy. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 29th June 1909 for 12 years. A shop assistant, 5 feet 4.1 inches tall chest 35, blue eyes, brown hair.

The squadron had been detached from Admiral Beatty's Battlecruiser Fleet a few days before the battle for gunnery practice with the Grand Fleet and acted as its heavy scouting force during the battle. At 18:30 Invincible abruptly appeared as a clear target before Lützow and Derfflinger. The two German ships then fired three salvoes each at Invincible and sank her in 90 seconds. At least one 12-inch shell from the third salvo struck her midships 'Q' turret. The shell penetrated the front of 'Q' turret, blew off the roof and detonated the midships magazines, which blew the ship in half, both ends of the ship temporarily sticking up out of the sea. There were only six survivors from a crew of 1,032. Amazingly one survivor was in the actual gun turret that was hit and somehow was thrown clear.
