Ross King Dyer was born in 1892 in Brockley (4th qtr 1892 Thingoe 4a:687) son of Alfred and Sarah DYER(née DEED)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Great Green, Brockley with his father Alfred DYER [54] cattleman on farm, born Sudbury; his mother Sarah [45] born Whepstead; brother Oscar [13] cattleman on farm, born Brockley.

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at Brockley Green, Brockley with his parents, brother Oscar (shepherd); sister Kate CUDBY [24] born Brockley and her son Leslie Albert CUDBY [2 months] born Brockley.

On the pension card his mother was at Brockley.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds

23 Apr 1917 - {The Battle of Arras: the attack on La Coulotte} La Coulotte/Berthonval. Bn. attacked LA COULOTTE. See C.O.'s report attached [comment; attached in Appendices]. Casualties: Killed - Capt C.A.S. MORRIS [comment; Charles Alan Smith MORRIS died as a POW 7/5/1917], 2/Lt. T.M.K. Fletcher [Thomas Murray Kilpin FLETCHER] and 2/Lt.V.E.CURRY [Vernon Edward CURRY]. Missing (believed killed) 2/Lt.T. AKROYD [sic; Thomas Noel ACKROYD]. Wounded & Missing - 2/Lt.F.R.D. ILLINGWORTH [Frederick Donald Roberts ILLINGWORTH]. Wounded - Lt. P.F.HART [comment; Percival Frank HART DOW 3/5/1917], 2/Lt.A.F.WOODFORD [Arthur Francis WOODFORD], W.M. STANTAN [William Martin STANTAN], A.J. FYSON [Arthur James FYSON], F. HAGUE [Frederick HAGUE, MC] and H.A. DEACON [Harold Augustus DEACON]. Other Ranks 320. Relieved by 13th Inf.Bde. and withdrew to camp at BERTHONVAL stayed night and moved on.
