Born in 29th March 1897 in Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr 4a:800) son of Charles and Ellen COOPER (née FENTON)
Baptsed in St Mary's, Bury St Edmunds on 23rd April 1897
As is so often the case, James Frederick or Fredrick James are used as the mood takes. Somehow CWGC have changed his mother's name from Ellen to Ann N but she is Ellen everywhere else.

Admitted to St.Mary's Infants School on 2 June 19005, leaving 30 April 1904.

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 4 St Botolph's Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles COOPER [32] labourer; his mother Ellen [32] tailoress; sisters Anna [11] and Alice [9]; brother Harry [5]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 14, an errand boy, he was at4 Baker's Lane, Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brother Harry (errand boy), Robert [9] and Percy [3]


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
1:10 am...4th East Yorks report they cannot obtain touch with us - this was established in 2 hours.
4 am...Situation - particularly quiet.
1:130 pm...HQ IB O.O.137 ordered an attack on GIRD LINE.
2:10 pm ...Our field guns firing short
3:45 pm...BM 584 cancelled O.O.137
6 pm... Brigade say it is reported that enemy counter-attacked
11:55 pm...Our artillery firing short. Reinforcements of 1 Off and 50 OR attached to Bn from 5th N.F. owing to weak strength of battalion.

CWGC records 5 of the battalion killed on 16th.

The newspaper report mentions his grave, but this must have been lost during later fightig, hence he is anmed on the Thiepval Memoral to the Missig of the Somme (some 72,000 names)
