John Davey was born in 1890 in Barnham (Thetford Q1-1890 4B:382), son of Edmund and Susan DAVEY (née BROWN).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Church Street, Barnham with his father Edmund DAVEY [32] a warrener; his mother Susan [33]; sister Nellie [3]; brother Walter [2] and uncle William DAVEY[32] farm labourer. They were all born in Barnham.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was in Barnham with his parents (father now a vermin killer and mother recorded as born in Feltwell); sister Nellie; brothers Walter (now an assistant vermin killer) and Sydney [9] born Barnham; grandmother Hannah DAVEY [78].

1911 census...Aged 21, a farm labourer, he was in Barnham with his parents (mother now recorded as born Barndon, Norfolk [sic]; sister Hilda DEACON [24] born Barnham and her son Sydney [4] born Thetford (she had lost one child); sister Nellie; brothers Walter (groom) and Sydney (gunsmith). 2 of the 8 siblings had died.

He married Nellie SANDERS (Thetford Q2-1917 4B:621)

His younger brother Sidney emigrated to Canada but died of his wounds in Belgium in 1917. see here

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
From the 5th to 7th September 1918 the battalion were engaged in taking the TEMPLEUX trenches and the area around Nurlu. The brigade war diary put the Suffolk losses on 6th as 2 OR killed, 1 officer wounded 12 OR wounded.

The Bury Free Press of 25th January 1919 reported:-

The accompanying photo is of Pte.John Davey, 15th Yeomanry Batt., Suffolk Regiment, who fell in action in France on September 6, 1918. Pte. Davey, who was 29 years of age,was well known throughout the district, being warmly regarded by all who knew him. Letters received from his officers prove his efficiency as a soldier, and his death is much regretted. Sincere sympathy has been extended to the widow in her loss.

John was found here and re-buried in Peronne in 1919
