"BECK ROW WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men and women of
BECK ROW, HOLYWELL ROW and WILDE STREET
who died in the service of their country
24 in the Great War of 1914-1919 and 8 in 1939-1945
and one civilian lady

Beck Row war memorial now stands on a grassed area at the corner of The Street with Lamble Close. It was originally installed near the Methodist Church further along The Street. Built by Messrs H.G.Neville and Son, and unveiled on 3rd July 1919 by Sergeant A.Mothersole M.M.
It was moved to its present position in 1995, the names from 1939-1945 were added and it was re-dedicated on 12th August 1995
Then polished granite panels were let into the plinths in 2001 to replace the various inscriptions which had become very badly eroded. It was rededicated on 11th November 2001
There are notes about it in the Bury and Norwich Post of 11th July 1916.

It takes the form of a tapered stone obelisk above a four stepped graduated plinth, all standing on a square paved area. It is surrounded by four chain linked bollards.

The upper panel on the front face carries the dedication inscription of :-

AND WILDE STREET
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES

Below that, on the next step down and on the three other faces, the panels record, in surname alphabetical order, the rank, forename, surname and regiment of those who fell.
Below one panel, incised into the stone plinth, is the name of MARTHA BRIGHTWELL - CIVILIAN.

"CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR"

There is also a framed and glazed Roll of Honour inside the Church,
but so far this has not been accessed.
It seems it details the 1056 who served and returned, and the 24 who died in 1914-1918

"BECK ROW METHODIST CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR"

There is also a framed and glazed Roll of Honour inside the Methodist Church,
which appears to be a more recent copy of the original as it is in very good condition.

The two missing names from the dead of 1939-1945, Howard Beaumont and Elmer Brown had only moved into the area and married local girls just before the war. Civilian, Martha Brightwell is also not recorded.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
