Robert Stephen Hayes was born in Cambridge on 9th May 1990, (Cambridge Q2-1990 9:1234), son of Diane BALDWIN and lived in Barkways, Burwell.
He completed his training at Infantry Training Centre, Catterick on 2nd February 2009. He was a keen sportsman, boxing and rugby were his interests and he
played for Newmarket Rugby Club.
The official release was:- Private Robert Hayes was killed as a result of an improvised explosive device blast while conducting a security patrol south of Check Point Paraang in southern Nad e-Ali, Helmand province. He had deployed to Afghanistan with C (Essex) Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment (Vikings), attached to the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Battle Group. Private Hayes was employed as a Rifleman within 6 Platoon, C (Essex) Company. He was responsible for providing assistance and security to the local population which included conducting patrols to disrupt insurgent activity in one of Helmand province's most challenging and dangerous areas. |
