1901 census...Aged 3, he was "near the Chapel", Chevington with his father Lewis QUANTRILL [46] horseman born Cheburgh; his mother Elizabeth [44] born Brockley; brothers Harry [16] and Walter [14] (both farm labourers born Horringer), William [12] born Hargrave, Charles [10] and Arthur [6] both born Chevington; sister Elizabeth [8] born Chevington. 1911 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at Charity Cottages, Chevington with his parents and brothers Charles and Arthur, both farm labourers His brother Arthur was killed in action in 1916 see here and brother Walter was killed in 1914 see here Brother William was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and survived the war |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The battalion was just NE of Monchy le Preux. The war dairy has :- 11th...Enemy attacked our position in LONG TRENCH at 5 am after a heavy bombardment of all calibres. Smoke and liquid fire was used. A counter-attack launched about 2 1/2 hours afterwards failed. Consolidation of position carried on - working parties supplied by Support Battalion. Enemy aeroplanes flew low over our lines all day, especially during the attack and met with little opposition Casualties total 63 to 12 noon, 2 Lieut Gunther killed. 2 Platoons of Queens moved into support line.
