Robert ELLIOT was born on 29th April 1898 in Coldstream, Scotland at High Street, Coldstream (Coldstream Q2-1898 page 10:30), son of William Marshall and Isabella Mary ELLIOT (née RYLE). His father was a chemist/druggist.


1901 census...Aged 2, he was at Ravensworth Crescent, Gateshead, with grandparents, Robert RYLE [66] born Wickham, Durham, and Mary Jane RYLE [58] born Gateshead, his mother Isabella Mary ELLIOT [31] born Gateshead, aunt Agnes Freeman RYLE [28] born Gateshead; great grandmother Agnes Brett[91] born Gateshead. His father, William M Elliot [4] born Edinburgh, was at his business as a chemist/soda water maker at 70 High Street, Coldstream..

His sister Grace Agnes was born in Coldstream [1903-1986] and brother William Ryle [1908-1993] presumably in Coldstream.

1911 census...Aged 12, he was at 94, High Street, Coldstream with his parents, sister Grace A. and brother William R.

The school roll of honour, giving his regiment, confirms his school connection. From the "East Anglian Record" it appears he was in Form V-b at Christmas 1913


He enlisted in Berwick on Tweed. His Soldier's Personal Effects record has not been found.
Dying of his wounds is is impossible at this stage to say how, where or when he was wounded, but from 1st June they had been operating in the area shown below
