BARBER, Robert

No.8626, Private, Robert BARBER
Aged 31

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of Illness on 13th July 1923

This man died too late for inclusion on CWGC records and even then 1923 would seem to be very later for a war memorial to be erected. However one possibility is that the original board was destroyed in 1984 in the fire which devastated the church. The current board would be a replacement and perhaps Robert was added then. He is definitely the most likely man, no Robert Barber appears as a casualty on any other records.

Robert Barber was born in Rede (2nd qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:780) son of Robert and Keziah Sarah BARBER(née CHALLIS)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Queens Road, Chedburgh with his father Robert BARBER [37] farm labouer born Chedburgh; his mother Sarah [34] born Wickhambrook; brothers James [14] farm labourer, Albert [5] born Rede, Ephraim [4] born Rede and Jonathan [1] born Chedburgh.

1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at The Green, Depden, with his parents; (Albert) blacksmith,, Ephraim [school}, Jonathan, Harold [9] born Chedburgh, sister Sarah [5] born Depden; grandmother Mary Ann Challis [84] and a boarder, Edward BARBER [28].
His mother had lost 3 of her 10 children

He married Alice F TODD in 1915, they had a son, Robrt W in 1916.
On the pension card his date of death is the same as in Bury Free Press and he was at Depden Green.

His brother Albert died in the sinking of HMHS Anglia in 1915. see here

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Such records as have been found definitely point to him being the brother of Albert
