Philip Henry Wells was born in Whepstead (3rd qtr 1894 Thingoe 4a:724) son of Henry and Ellen WELLS (née HOWE)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Rede Road, Whepstead with his father Henry WELLS [39] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [35] born Chevington; brothers Algernon [4] and David [8 months]; sister Emily [3]. All except his mother were born in Whepstead.

1911 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Queen's Hill Cottages, Chedburgh with his parents, brothers Algernon and David; sisters Emily and Lily [4] born Rede.

On the pension card his father was at Clay Hall Cottages, Depden. CWGC have his father at Elm Cottages, Depden



He enlisted in Chedburgh
Battalion war diary has :-
22nd, Lieut E Clayton left Battn to join R.F.A. Reinforcements 5 O.R. Ptes J Godfrey 27074, D Wells 1541 killed 3 OR wounded. Relieved by 14th H.L.I. Battn returned to Noeux les Mines.
