ROSE, Cecil Robert

No.14006, Private, Cecil Robert ROSE
Aged 32

8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on 7th May 1917

Cecil Robert Rose was born in Drinkstone,(1st qtr 1885 Stow 4a:758), son of William and Kezia ROSE (née BUTCHER).

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Rattlesden Road, Drinkstone with his father William ROSE [42] farm labourer born Woolpit; his mother Keziah [43] born Sicklesmere; sisters Abigail [16], Beatrice [10], Eva [9] and Rebecca [1]; brother Walter J. [14] farm labourer, Leonard G. [8] and Sydney A.[4]. All the children were born in Drinkstone.

1901 census...Aged 16, a yardman on farm, he was at The Green, Drinkstone with his parents; brothers Walter (farm labourer), George (Leonard),and Sidney (both farm Labourers); sisters Beatrice, Eva and Rebecca.

1911 census...Aged 26, a farm labourer, he was at Drinkstone Green with his parents, sisters Abigail and Rebecca and brother Sydney. His newly married brother Leonard was with his wife in Woolpit.

On the pension card his mother was at Cambourne Farm, Drinkstone.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds in 1914. From their regimental numbers it looks as if the brothers all signed on together. Certainly Cecil and Sydney signed side by side. They all served in the 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, a practice that was not universally welcomed due to the effect this could have on a family as this could lead to deaths side by side as well. In this case their deaths were spread over 7 months.

The 8th Suffolk on 7th May 1917 were near FONTAINE WOOD, the war diary has :-
Trenches - 7/5/17 - Nothing of particular interest occurred during the day - Defence orders received. Our artillery carried out special programme. Message received that FONTAINE WOOD was full of enemy and that our heavy artillery would fire. Traffic orders received.

Only Cecil and Lance Corporal Benjamin Gould were killed, neither has a known grave
