Albert Edward Smith was born in Felsham (1st qtr 1897 Stow 4a:852), son of John William and Ellen SMITH (née PILBROW)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Cockfield Road, Felsham with his father John SMITH [47] horseman; his mother Ellen [39]; brothers Ernest [18] woodman - pole making, Sidney [12] and Reginald [8]; sister Agnes [10]; cousin Beatrice PILBROW [5]. All were born in Felsham.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Grange Farm, Thorpe Morieux with his uncle Walter OSBORNE, farm bailiff; his aunt Susannah OSBORNE and cousin Blanche. His parents were at Drinkstone Green with his brothers Sidney (horseman), Cecil [7] and Percy [6] (both born Felsham). His mother had lost 2 of her 7 children.

On the pension card his parents were at Chapel Lane, Drinkstone Green.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The battalion was in the trenches at Potijze, close to Ypres S.E.. The war dairy has
Trenches - 4 Mar - Snow fell all morning after a wet night. Enemy very quiet during night; 'S' line shelled in afternoon. A successful patrol went out in front of "A3" under Sgt Chinnock and approached to within 30 yards of enemy wire. Casualties 1 killed 4 wounded.
